Why do I need to see a Psychiatrist?
What’s the difference between Psychiatrist and a Psychologist or talk therapist?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who specializes in mental health. Psychiatrists can:
- Diagnose mental health conditions
- Prescribe and manage medications
- Evaluate how medical conditions may affect mental health
- Provide psychotherapy when appropriate
- Treat complex conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD, PTSD, and substance use disorders
Is therapy a part of the treatment?
At Vicktree BHC, we believe that therapy is an important part of comprehensive mental health care and often works best when combined with medication management when clinically indicated.
Medication can help reduce symptoms such as depression, anxiety, mood instability, inattention, or sleep disturbances, while therapy helps you develop coping skills, process emotions, improve relationships, and build long-term resilience. Together, they can provide a more complete and effective path toward healing and recovery.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Every person's mental health journey is different. That's why we take an individualized approach to medication management, carefully tailoring treatment to your unique needs, concerns, and goals. We partner with you every step of the way to find the safest, most effective, and evidence-based treatment plan designed to help you achieve lasting wellness.
How long will it take?
Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time treatment can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek care in the first place.
I want to get the most out of care. What can I do to help?
We're glad you're committed to getting the most out of your treatment. Your active participation, honesty, and engagement are essential components of successful care. We believe in a collaborative approach, working together as a team to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your goals. Treatment recommendations are thoughtfully tailored based on factors such as your age, medical and psychiatric history, prior treatment experiences, family history, lifestyle, and individual preferences.
Why are child medication management rates higher than adults?
Greater complexity of evaluations: Child psychiatrists must assess not only the child, but also developmental milestones, family dynamics, school functioning, behavior across settings, and often obtain collateral information from parents, teachers, pediatricians, and therapists. This makes visits more time-intensive than many adult appointments.
Additional caregiver involvement: Pediatric psychiatric treatment typically requires significant discussion with parents or guardians regarding symptoms, treatment options, medication risks, benefits, and monitoring. These conversations add time and complexity to medication management visits.
How will I see my provider? What is Telehealth?
Telehealth allows you to receive high-quality psychiatric care from the comfort and privacy of your home through secure video appointments.
At Vicktree BHC, all telehealth visits are conducted using a HIPAA-compliant, encrypted video platform designed to protect your personal health information and ensure confidential communication between you and your provider.
